The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It starts from the lush rainforest at the Machame Gate, ascending through moorlands, alpine deserts, and glaciers before reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Your adventure begins at the Machame Gate, where you’ll trek through dense rainforests filled with exotic wildlife. As you ascend, the landscape transforms into heather and moorlands with stunning views of Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak. The route challenges you with steep ascents, including the famous Barranco Wall, before leading you to high-altitude camps that aid in acclimatization. The final summit push begins at midnight from Barafu Camp, culminating in an unforgettable sunrise at the Roof of Africa, followed by a descent through the lush Mweka Route.

Day 01 :

Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,020m)

Your journey starts with a scenic drive from Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate, where you’ll complete registration and meet your guides and porters. The trek kicks off through lush, green rainforest, with towering trees draped in moss and the sounds of exotic birds filling the air. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain, so trekking poles come in handy. After a steady ascent, you’ll reach Machame Camp, nestled in the heather zone, where you’ll rest and prepare for the next day.

Day 02 :

Machame Camp (3,020m) to Shira Camp (3,840m)

After breakfast, you’ll continue your ascent, leaving the dense forest behind as you enter the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper, with rocky ridges offering panoramic views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys. As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes sparse, with hardy shrubs and unique plant species like giant lobelias. After about 5–6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp, situated on a plateau with stunning views of Mount Meru in the distance.

Day 03 :

Shira Camp (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m) via Lava Tower (4,630m)

This is an important acclimatization day. You’ll trek towards the impressive Lava Tower, a volcanic rock formation at 4,630m. The ascent is challenging as you gain altitude, helping your body adjust to the thinner air. After lunch near Lava Tower, you’ll descend to Barranco Camp, which sits in a beautiful valley beneath the Breach Wall. The descent helps with acclimatization, following the "climb high, sleep low" principle. The campsite offers spectacular views of the Barranco Wall, your next challenge.

Day 04 :

Barranco Camp (3,960m) to Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Your day begins with the exciting climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep, rocky face that requires some scrambling but no technical climbing skills. Reaching the top is incredibly rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the Karakara Valley and distant glaciers. The trail then undulates through alpine desert terrain, crossing streams and ridges before arriving at Karanga Camp. This shorter day allows for additional acclimatization, crucial for your upcoming summit attempt.

Day 05 :

Karanga Camp (4,035m) to Barafu Camp (4,640m)

Today’s trek is a gradual ascent through a barren, rocky landscape with stunning views of Kibo Peak dominating the horizon. The air becomes thinner as you approach Barafu Camp, your final base before the summit attempt. You’ll have an early dinner and rest, as you’ll start your climb to the summit around midnight. The camp’s name, "Barafu," means "ice" in Swahili, reflecting the cold, harsh environment at this altitude.

Day 06 :

Barafu Camp (4,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), then Descent to Mweka Camp (3,100m)

The most challenging and rewarding part of your trek begins before midnight. You’ll ascend in the dark, guided by headlamps, with the cold air and steep slopes testing your determination. The path leads to Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, where the first light of dawn illuminates the horizon. After a short rest, you’ll continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

After celebrating your incredible achievement, you’ll begin the descent back to Barafu Camp for a brief rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp, where the warmer air and lush surroundings provide a welcome change.

Day 07 :

Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m), Drive to Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast, you’ll make your final descent through the rainforest, where the trail can be slippery, especially if wet. The sounds of birds and the sight of lush vegetation signal your return to lower altitudes. Upon reaching Mweka Gate, you’ll receive your well-deserved summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, where a hot shower and a celebratory meal await.
