Overview
The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. Known for its quiet and serene atmosphere, this route offers trekkers an opportunity to experience the beauty of the mountain away from the more crowded southern routes. The Rongai Route is a great choice for those who prefer a less challenging, but still rewarding, trek to the summit. It features varied landscapes, including rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts, and provides a gradual ascent that enhances your acclimatization.
The Rongai Route is known for its beautiful, untouched wilderness. The trek begins at Nalemoru Gate, where you’ll immediately encounter the lush rainforest, home to an array of wildlife. As you ascend through alpine meadows and moorlands, you’ll be treated to incredible views of the Kibo Peak and Mawenzi Peak. The route is less frequented, allowing you to enjoy a more peaceful experience. Your summit push begins from Kibo Camp around midnight, with the final leg to Uhuru Peak, offering magnificent sunrise views. Afterward, you will descend via the Marangu Route, completing the circle.
